Monarch Butterfly Waystation & Pollinator Habitat Garden Planting Event

Saturday, September 30, 2017 - 9:00am
Green Apple Day of Service
Longfellow Elementary School
2830 Holmes Street
Kansas City, MO 64109
United States

The Monarch Butterfly Waystation will serve as an outdoor classroom on the school campus as well as restore some of the pollinator habitat. We will provide public access to teachers, students, neighbors and the surrounding community. This garden will make an impact on the local environment by advancing environmental and sustainability literacy as well as establish a pollinator habitat.

STEMS on the VINES/KC Creators Clubs along with the principal of Longfellow Elementary public school and KCPS staff is coordinating this event. Volunteers will plant milkweed and nectar seedlings as well as place a decorative bench. Garden maintenance including weeding, watering, cleaning, landscaping, mulching and preparing the soil is also part of this event.

We will install descriptive signage to educate about Monarch butterfly life cycles, native plants, habitat restoration, Monarch Butterfly migration patterns and the impact of pollinators. We hope to put in a rain barrel. Students will build a solar-powered water fountain.
