Greenhouse Resurrection

1. Assess and repair greenhouse and repair/restore planter boxes.
2. Implement a year-long sustainable gardening lesson plan into science curriculum.
Stagger grade units so that maintenance of plants is continuous through the school year (4th would plant seeds, 6th grade would harvest, etc.)
3. Plan a “Day of Service” to do all planting in greenhouse (weekend day after holidays). Maintenance will take place during classroom time.

The goal of the project was to repair and refurbish the greenhouse on the roof of the Takoma Education Campus so that the students can use it to learn sustainable skills and practices, learn where food comes from, and implement science lessons into an interactive lab. The goal was successfully met. The greenhouse was deep cleaned and the heating system was inspected and repaired. Unfortunately a few months into refurbishment, strong winds damaged a few of the windows and a door of the greenhouse. Luckily the school was able to contract a repairman to fix the damages. In addition to the newly renovated greenhouse, the use of planter boxes were designed to be implemented into the lesson plan for students. Through a generous donation provided by Lumber 84, materials were collected to design and build three 3' x 4' large cedar planter boxes, each 2' deep. Seedlings were planted by the students in the winter and will be transferred to the planter boxes in spring. All deliverables of this project were met and we look forward to receiving more updates from the school as the year progresses into warmer weather.
