PS 104 Community Garden

The students will be involved in creating and maintaining a community garden. They will be active in amending the soil, spring and fall cleanups, planting items, removing weeds as they grow, watering on a daily basis, pruning, staking and caging plants as they grow and harvesting crops. They will be engaged in lessons involving what plants need to live and the process of photosynthesis. They will also learn about the nutritional value and the importance of eating a proper amount of fruits and vegetables on a regular basis. Students will sample familiar and new fruits and vegetables during tastings. They will participate in using the fruits, vegetables and herbs in recipes and food dishes. They lastly will learn about community service as they donate food they grew to others in the neighborhood.
