Residue Management

On March 2 we will carry out activities within the school`s facilities related to the management of inorganic and organic waste with the Rochester community and members of the Vereda de Fusca and on March 3 we will plant native trees in the Ronda de la Quebrada de Fusca and in the CTU (Compañía de Trabajos Urbanos) Quarry with the purpose of contributing to the recovery of areas that have presented some type of negative ecological impact because of human use.

The activities of March 2 are the following:

1. Video of the Green Apple Day of Service to be shown in enlistment: Please use the following link during the first session of class (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKoIb0D5N_g) and discuss with the kids the following questions:
What is the Green Apple Day for ?
Which will be my input for the Green Apple Day?
If the Green Apple Day was under my charge, what activities will I propose?

2. Learn about the three R's and launch the solid waste contest: The eleventh grade volunteer students will implement activities designed by them to train the community on the proper use of collectors, to reduce waste and increase reuse. The schedule in which the students will visit your class is attached as a pdf. During this activity, the solid waste contest will be explained to all the grades, so that the community knows what is expected of the contest and its rules. Likewise, starting this week, the management community will be informed about the inorganic waste by blocks in order to become familiarized with their students during their enlistments. The goal is to reduce waste generated monthly by 10%.

3. Collection of waste in the Canal de Fenoco: This activity is exclusive for tenth grade students. They will leave the school accompanied by the teacher in charge of that session (10:00a.m.) where they will perform the collection of waste discarded in the peripheral areas of the school. In this activity the participation of the residents of the Vereda Fusca is expected, which are coordinated by the Presidency of the Community Action Board of the Vereda Fusca. Once the collection of the waste is carried out, they are taken to the school's facilities. The amount of waste collected during that cleaning day will be measured and recorded.

4. Launching of the Spectacle Bear Booklet. The Sustainability Team will read stories from the Spectacle Bear Booklet between 11:30 and 12:00 in front of the Bear’s Garden of Block 2 (in front of the auditorium). Please invite the students that have recess time at that hour to go and listen to the stories. If Spanish teachers want to read some of this stories in class we can give you the material if you asks us with time.

5. Days before the Green Apple Day, students of CASE will visit the classrooms of the different grades to encourage students to not bring food in packages on March 2 to reduce the amount of waste generated. We also need your help. Please tell the kids that we expect healthy lunch boxes with CERO RESIDUES on that day. There will be no collectors.

6. Organic Waste Conversation tour with parents of the school and community of Fusca: The purpose of the discussion and tour of the school facilities, is to disseminate information among the guests, the different strategies and technologies that are being implemented in the school and learn how companies and organizations of which the guests are part of make an adequate management effort about inorganic and organic waste generation. This is expected to build a support network.

The activities of March 3 are the following and to which participants are cordially invited to participate are:

Planting of native trees in areas affected by anthropogenic activities:
Planting of trees in quarry CTU (Urban Works Company): The CTU company, on issues of environmental regulation, is implementing a soil restoration program that includes the planting of native trees in areas that have been affected by their extraction practices of material for the manufacturing of asphalt.
The activity includes the planting of approximately 154 trees provided by the school and the Secretary of Environment of Chia in the terraces designed for the ecological restoration of that area.
Parents, students and teachers will participate during the planting day (maximum capacity of 150 person)
Families from the residential areas surrounding the quarry will be invited to participate in the planting day (maximum capacity 150 people).
The first stage of planting will be carried out by the participants of the Rochester School and will take place at 8:00 a.m. within the quarry grounds where twelfth grade students will supervise and help with the planting. Ends approximately at 10:30 a.m. We must be at the School at 7:30am to walk to the quarry.
The second stage of planting will be carried out by the residents of the residential complex surrounding the quarry and will take place at 11:00 a.m. within the premises of the quarry where twelfth grade students supervise and help with the planting. Ends 1:00 p.m.
Wear footwear (high boots or soles that have good grip) and appropriate clothing for the activity. Snacks, water for hydration, gloves and gardening shovels will be provided.
The quarry will provide holes for planting and will designate the areas where the trees should be planted by the Rochester School and the inhabitants of the Residential Complexes.
The quarry will provide training on industrial safety to the participants.
The quarry will provide the land for planting.
The Rochester School provides 1 ton of compost for planting and restoration activities within the quarry sites.

2.Planting trees in the Fusca Brook: This activity is optional for the people that finished planting on the quarry and would like to continue planting. The Fusca Brook, located in the area adjacent to the Hacienda Fusca eastern part of the Cerro, presents environmental damage due to the presumed indiscriminate felling of native forest and presumed indiscriminate filling in the banks around the brook, which supplies drinking water to 50% of the inhabitants of the village of Fusca. As part of the activity of the Green Apple Day of Service, which also has a pedagogical purpose, tree planting will be carried out in the affected areas so that the inhabitants understand the importance of preventing destruction of the area due to their anthropic activities and contribute to the care of this resources that it provides to the community such as fresh water.
The planting activity will have the support of the affected community and is coordinated by the Fusca Community Action Board.
The planting of 180 native trees provided by the Community of Fusca and the Environmental Secretariat of Chia will be carried out.
The day will begin at 9:00 a.m. in the lands affected by the illegal felling of tree.
The owners of the affected area must provide 200 trees, land, preparation of the areas for planting and tools for the activity.
Participants must wear shoes (high boots or soles that have good grip) and appropriate clothing for the activity, snacks, water for hydration, gloves and gardening shovels.
