Stop Throwing It Away! Saving Our Planet By Washing Dishes

August 13, 2019

Help me give my students actual dishes and silverware instead of paper, plastic, and styrofoam as we learn to reduce, reuse, and recycle while preparing and sharing our lunchtime as a family.
My first, second, and third graders will learn both practical life, environmental, science, and citizenship lessons as they work together in my Montessori classroom using, washing, drying, and caring for their new dishes and silverware.

Our students are going to change the world and save the environment one lunch at a time!
Instead of using paper and plastic dishes and utensils that just end up in our landfills, my class will use these place settings and silverware to learn and lead by example the difference we can all make if we try. They'll work together to set the table before we eat together and learn manners and how a community can work better if we all share and care. Then we'll wash, dry, and put away our dishes instead of tossing them in the trash.

As part of an overall classroom focus to respect ourselves, each other, and the environment the children will learn that they can make a difference in our world. We will consciously observe, interpret, and problem solve waste issues in our room and school as part of our role as citizens of planet earth.

My students love doing the dishes!

The dishes you provided are used every day in our class as we prepare and share our snacks and then everyone wants to be the ones selected to get to wash the dishes. If we didn't take turns they would each want to do it and the dishes would be washed 20+ times each day.

Thank you so much for helping to promote responsibility and sustainability in our classroom - Just say no to paper plates and plastic silverware!!!
