Teaching Tragedy of the Commons
We presented a project about scarcity and the Tragedy of the Commons to a class of 2nd graders using a nonrenewable resource: Goldfish. We had the students sit in a circle then passed a bowl around first telling them to take as many as they wanted. As expected, the first few students took 40 and, even when the rest of them only took 1, there wasn't enough to make it all around the circle. So, we passed the bowl around again and each student took 10 Goldfish and the bowl made it completely around the circle.
