I teach at an urban, Title I school where over 90% of students come from low-income households. Federal funding provides free breakfast, lunch, and snack for every student. Over the past four years, I have had the pleasure of running an after-school garden club alongside the nonprofit Fit4Kids for 20 students in grades three through five. Our club is filled with high energy students who love digging in the dirt, eating fresh fruits and veggies, and growing food for our school community to enjoy! Garden Club is an amazing real-world learning experience for students- especially for our club members with special needs who don't always feel successful in traditional academic settings. In Garden Club, students acquire skills they can use for the rest of their lives while learning to love healthy eating. Each year, we strive to make our school garden better than before!
